4th Quarter Update
September 2021
The McCowan Park Natatorium and Recreation Center feasibility study was finalized for staff review in Q4. The report identifies priorities based on feedback from the steering committee and the results of the community survey. The feasibility study also includes amenities to build out the full McCowan Park Master Plan such as a natatorium, recreation center, upgraded athletic fields, an amphitheater, and a walking trail. The study recommends a 3-phase implementation approach to complete the Master Plan Improvements for Curtistene S. McCowan Park. Funding for the planned park improvements will be addressed in Q1 of FY 2022. This item will continue into the FY 2022 Business Plan and can continue to be tracked in that report.
3rd Quarter Update
July 2021
Staff continued to host bi-weekly meetings in Q3. Parks and Recreation staff along with the consultant, Brinkley Sargent, finalized the City of DeSoto Community Interest and Opinion Survey to analyze residents’ opinion about various topics regarding the community’s aquatic amenities, aquatic programs, indoor recreation amenities, and programs. The data will be used to establish priorities for the future improvement of Parks and Recreation services and guide City leaders in making decisions that best reflect the community’s needs. Staff anticipates that the feasibility study will be completed by end of September. Financing for the project has been placed on hold pending a Voter Referendum in May 2022 based on recent legislative changes made by the State of Texas regarding funding for new park facility projects.
