Chief Joseph Costa comes to us from the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department, where he has worked since 2005. He retired from the Massachusetts State Police in 2003 after 25 years of service. His law enforcement experience includes time in patrol, radar enforcement, homicide investigations, narcotics, Governor's Auto Theft Task Force, Internal Affairs, DEA Task Force and the Bristol County District Attorney's Office. Since his retirement and relocation to Texas, he was a Sergeant/Investigator with the Texas Lottery Commission, and an Investigator with the Dallas County District Attorney's Office.

Chief Costa holds a Master's Degree in Criminal Justice/Education from Boston University, Boston, Massachusetts, as well as a Master's TCLEOSE Certificate.  He is a graduate of the DEA Drug Unit Commanders Academy #22 and the FBI National Academy #212.

We have an authorized strength of 70 sworn officers and 36 civilian personnel. These employees are eager to provide the Citizens of DeSoto with professional law enforcement services.

Citizen Partnerships
The DeSoto Police Department recognizes that police/citizen partnerships are the essence of providing quality police services. DeSoto Police Department strives to create those partnerships through programs including, but not limited to, Citizens Police Academies, Neighborhood Partnership meetings, Senior Citizen Symposiums, and summer "GREAT" programs for the youth.
