About Nature Preserve
Windmill Hill Nature Preserve is 75 acres of land, set aside by the City of DeSoto and Dallas County as a nature preserve. Nestled in woods providing shade in the summer, there is a great hiking trail with gentle slopes and some very steep hills, which can provide a challenge at times. There is a bridge that crosses Ten Mile Creek, named in memory of the late Steven Ray Vaughan. |

Hiking Trail
The hiking trail, located in the Windmill Hill Nature Preserve was named as the Best Urban Hiking Trail by the Dallas Observer in September 2001, “Though just a few blocks south of Highway 67, it’s called a ‘quiet place’ for good reason. Wind along its foot trails, viewing the well-preserved flowers and fauna of the region, and soon you’re lost in another world.
This is no quick-step hiking place. Unless you’re looking for a leisurely walk and literally prepared to stop and smell the flowers, don’t bother. Dedicated in 1993, the preserve is open to the public, free, from 6 a.m. to sundown daily.
