On Tuesday, January 5, 2021, DeSoto Fire Chief Jerry Duffield and Police Chief Joseph Costa joined the area’s many first responders who drove through the Ellis Davis Field House operated by Dallas County/Parkland Medical to receive their COVID-19 vaccinations providing an additional layer of protection in the midst of the deadly Corona Pandemic.

Fire Chief Duffield, who also serves as Incident Commander at the Ellis Davis facility, expressed strong confidence in the current COVID-19 vaccines and encouraged those with the opportunity to get vaccinated to take immediate advantage of it. “Being vaccinated is the best way to protect myself, my family, my first responder colleagues, and the DeSoto residents I come into contact with every day. I can’t wait for more people to have this opportunity, which will hopefully be soon,” said Duffield. “The vaccinations that are being used have been proven to be well over 90% effective and the shot that I received today was pretty painless.” Duffield also noted that individuals considered high risk are likely to come into contact with the virus through people around them who show no symptoms. “Getting vaccinated could end up saving your life!”

Police Chief Costa stated that getting vaccinated not only keeps his officers safe but it also keeps DeSoto safe. “If one of our officers gets COVID-19 it’s going to keep them out of work for an extended period of time and is likely to take other officers out of commission as well. Getting vaccinated protects our officers and will allow us to maintain the critical staffing levels that we need to keep things as safe as possible.”

Vaccination distribution and planning is being coordinated and conducted through Dallas County Health and Human Services. Residents can go to the Dallas County website to register, be pre-screened, and receive additional information about the COVID-19 vaccine. Here is the link that they provided: https://www.dallascounty.org/covid-19/covid-19-vaccination.php. Dallas County is currently limiting registration to County residents who are in phase 1A or phase 1B as defined by DSHS. Registrants will be notified of next steps when additional vaccine doses become available.
