A record crowd of 11,205 area residents spent their 4th of July holiday at DeSoto’s Grimes Park listening to great music, enjoying tasty foods from local vendors, and viewing a spectacular fireworks show at the joint Independence Day celebration of DeSoto and Lancaster. Both cities have collaborated on this annual celebration since the mid-2000s and this year it was DeSoto’s turn to host.
“In addition to recognizing America’s independence, the people of DeSoto can be thankful for the wonderful partnership that we have with our Best Southwest City neighbor Lancaster,” said DeSoto Mayor Curtistene S. McCowan. “The 4th of July celebration partnership that DeSoto has shared with Lancaster for at least a decade and a half demonstrates the type of neighborly cooperation and togetherness that held our colonies together during the toughest days of the American Revolution. United we stand and united we celebrate!”
Music highlighted the early portion of the celebration featuring extended performances by Grammy Award Winning R&B singer Chrisette Michele and Jazz Saxophonist Don Diego. A spectacular fireworks show capped off this great event.
The City of DeSoto would like to thank our sponsors for making the combined Desoto/Lancaster event a success. They include Superior Health Plan, Republic Services, This Country’s Best Italian Ice, Bank of DeSoto, Atkinson Toyota, PlainsCapital Bank, and the DeSoto Economic Development Corporation Board. We would also like to thank the Keep DeSoto Beautiful Board and the Can’d Aid Foundation for facilitating our recycling efforts at the 4th of July event.
